I visited Gran Canaria for the first time in November 2021, as soon as we were able to travel again after the long restrictions of the COVID pandemic. After so many months of lockdowns and isolation, I desperately needed a change of environment, some fresh air, and a new adventure. But honestly, I wasn’t prepared for what I found there! The island’s beauty completely took me by surprise. Gran Canaria is often referred to as a “miniature continent,” and it truly lives up to that name. The landscape is incredibly diverse—one moment you’re surrounded by the golden sand dunes of Maspalomas, and the next, you’re hiking through the lush green forests in the mountainous interior.
What really stood out to me was the contrast between the dramatic volcanic cliffs and deep ravines, and the tranquil sand beaches. I felt a deep connection with the rugged peaks of Roque Nublo and Pico de las Nieves, where the views were absolutely breath-taking. Gran Canaria’s unique ecosystems, from its cactus-filled deserts in the south to subtropical laurel forests in the north, make it a paradise for anyone who loves nature. It was so captivating that I knew I had to return.
In February 2022, I went back for about three weeks to explore more of the island’s natural beauty. I spent time hiking, photographing the landscapes, and just soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. Gran Canaria gave me the reset I desperately needed after such a challenging time, and its stunning nature left a lasting impression on me. It’s a place that has become very close to my heart, and I look forward to going back one day to uncover even more of its magic.
